Basal Activity Information What exactly is "Basal" when reviewing FitDay's activity reports? That's a question I've seen asked a lot and frankly, FitDay is a bit lacking in providing explanations that are readily available for folks to learn what their charts mean unless they become a member and even then, the info is buried. But I did find an answer! Basal is a calculation of how many calories you burn just by being alive. It takes a formula based upon your age, gender, weight and height. So, whatever you see for an individual's "basal" activity level, that means just by being alive, they are burning that many calories. Okay, so what does "lifestyle" mean, exactly? When you sign up for FitDay, you answer some questions. One of the questions is what your normal activity level is (i.e. sedentary with little or no movement most of the day to highly active, constantly on the go such as a postal carrier, machinist or the like). Based upon how you answer this, the program is designed to assume your activity personality will typically use so many calories during a typical day. This only changes when you add activities that go above and beyond your typical day. Okay, so if I'm entering activities, do I follow my entire day and add in everything I did throughout the day? No. Not unless the activity you did is above and beyond your "typical" day. In other words, you wouldn't add in 8 hours of sleep unless you slept an additional 8 hours above and beyond what you normally sleep. If going to the gym and working out for two hours is a regular thing for you, you should be selecting the "highly active" selection in your profile at FitDay (located under the "home" tab). However, if going to the gym is an every-other-day or even three times a week event, then you'd add this in under the "activities" for that specific day. If you have any questions on how to use FitDay, I urge you to contact them as provided on their site. If there are comments you'd like to make regarding this article, please contact me by leaving me a note or emailing me by using the navigational links I've provided. Miss These? |
